TRAVELERS AID SOCIETY OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT IS A CASE MANAGEMENT ORGANIZATION PROVIDING PERMANENT HOUSING AND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES TO SOCIALLY-ECONOMICALLY CHALLENGED INDIVIDUALS AND /OR DISCONNECTED FAMILIES AND TRAVELERS BY RETURNING THEM TO POINT OF ORIGIN, ADVANCING THE WELL-BEING OF THE COMMUNITY AND EMPOWERING THEM TO BECOME SELF-SUFFICIENT CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS OF SOCIETY.

FACTOIDS

1. The League of Catholic Women created Travelers Aid Society in 1923 as an offshoot of the YMCA.  We are not a travel agency, we are a full-service, non – profit human services agency.
2. Travelers Aid Society provides services for more than 55,000 travelers each year at Metro Airport alone.  Our friendly staff or volunteers provide everything from simple airport directions to helping people with special needs reach their connecting flights.
3. Travelers Aid Society helps 250 runaways return home every year by providing emergency airline tickets and adult supervision along the trip home.
4. Travelers Aid Society introduces babies from foreign lands to their newly adoptive families each year by providing greeting, babysitting and delivery service.
5. Travelers Aid Society counsels homeless and those at risk of homelessness, helping them access shelter, food, clothing and housing.
6. Travelers Aid Society introduced the concept of long-term case management for homeless in the Detroit area.  The typical commitment to a client lasts 12 months and can go on as long as two years or more.  One-third of Travelers Aid’s clients are in comprehensive case management programs that help them fully recover from homelessness as well as substance abuse.
7.  The average yearly income of a Travelers Aid Society new client is less than $2,000.
8. Travelers Aid Society has developed an economical and efficient transitional housing program for homeless people in cooperation with private landlords.  The agency strives to find solutions that benefit the clients and the community simultaneously.

In 1992, Travelers Aid Society created the first full-service, multi-agency collaboration, a continuum of care, by combining the strengths of many human service agencies.  Travelers Aid hopes to catch those who slip through the cracks, while providing the most complete service to help rebuild lives.
10. Travelers Aid Society operates more than ten programs designed to decrease homelessness for those suffering from chronic substance abuse histories and mental illness, by providing government subsidized housing programs.
